Improving your health during the menopause is at the top of most women’s wish list.
Exercise is a very popular way to improve both your physical and emotional wellbeing, however you may not know what is safe and effective for you at this stage.
Throughout the different stages of our lives, our body has different needs when it comes to exercising. For women going through the menopause, there are two significant health risk factors to bear in mind. The first is your Cardiovascular (heart) health and the other is bone strength.
Did you know that a woman can lose up to 20% of their bone density in the 5 years after menopause? This means load-bearing exercise is important to the body to lay down bone tissue.
Pilates is a great form of exercise for bone loading due to the positions used and the action of the muscles. Exercises such as 4-point kneeling are brilliant for building strength through the wrist joints.
Feeling a bit soft around the middle? Softening of the muscles due to hormonal changes not only means less strength but also less control over your movements.
Pilates builds your core to co-ordinate the control both in your joints and throughout the rest of your body.
Being in the menopause doesn’t mean you can’t build muscle, but it does affect your ability to build and sustain muscle bulk. The way we teach at The Pilates Corner is designed to ensure you move safely and make the most of your classes.
Pilates is also low impact which means less pressure on your pelvic floor and pelvic organs which are heavily affected by hormone changes during this time.
Feeling hot and bothered? Cardiovascular exercise can be tricky during the menopause, especially if you are experiencing hot flushes, don’t let this put you off exercising altogether though as 30 minutes a day is enough to reduce the health risks.
At The Pilates Corner we have plenty of fans dotted around so you can adjust the temperature to suit you!

SUPPORT
It's very common in the fitness industry for people to join a gym or health club and receive zero accountability or support. You simply get given a membership card and told to get on with it. We do things a bit differently and with a smile. Our whole business exists because our members feel supported and looked after in our classes. You're never just a face in the crowd.
FLEXIBILITY
Our timetable is arranged with classes running mornings, afternoons, evenings and weekends with many different class types and styles.
Your membership gives you freedom to book which ever class you wish when you like with the number of classes you can do a week specified by the membership you choose.

Have you ever asked yourself:
If so, you're in the right place...
Getting into exercise after a long break can be tough, but with the right instructor team, community and accountability that consistently help you towards your goals it becomes much easier.
At The Pilates Corner we understand that not everyone is a 'gym bunny' and not everyone wants to be bright red and sweaty at the end of a workout.
Your body may not be as flexible or strong as it was in your 20s and 30s yet it still has the potential to be strong and capable. We guide you safely through getting reacquainted with your body as you exercise.
Pilates is not an easy form of exercise but it is a very accessible class style. Our classes allow you to work at your level and pace with no pressure to 'keep up' with the more experienced members of class.
Our average age of member is over 50 years old and everyone is very friendly and welcoming to new members. You don't need to have fancy gym wear or be super co-ordinated, just a willingness to give yourself a chance to try new things and then stand back and enjoy the results.
Our members report less back pain, more flexibility and mobility, improved upper-body strength, muscle tone and new friends!
No matter what your current level of fitness is, our team can show you how to reclaim your body and achieve your health and fitness dreams.
Don't just take our word for it, here's what some of our 50+ and Fabulous members say about our classes...

“Back in 2015 my friend said I must try Pilates with Emma and took me along to one of the early classes - I've been going every week ever since! The small size classes mean Emma can give you full attention and be hands on to make sure you are exercising correctly - plus lots of different routines, lots of encouragement and a really friendly atmosphere. A bonus is that the lower back pain I used to suffer from has now gone and I no longer need to worry about digging the garden. Hurry up and book a New Year class with Pilates with Emma! ”
Elizabeth Thomas, 57

“I have been having one to one lessons with Emma for some years, initially in my home, online during lockdown and now in person again. Emma is an excellent teacher who pays close attention to detail. I was concerned this would be affected when we had to go online but she still managed to correct my posture! I feel my back and core are stronger, indeed I haven’t experienced an episode of Severe back pain for some time. In addition, our lessons are fun, and we have become good friends.”
Janet Jackson, 66
“Pilates with Emma is not only an excellent workout for your whole body but friendly and fun too. Fun but challenging for all ages and levels.”
Debbie Naylor, 56
“I would tell them that is they couldn’t join a better class. They would get all round improvements while having fun and that they won’t find a better teacher. At 74, due to your class, I can still touch my toes easily. Not something I could do before.”
Stella Wilson, 74
“Pilates with Emma has done wonders for my bad back. Emma gives clear instruction, she has great patience and a lovely sense of humour. Emma caters for every level of skill in each class, so you always feel you are part of the group.”
Teresa Hazelwood, 68
“Pilates with Emma is a key building block towards strengthening your core with a fun element. Once you have your posture and alignment sorted, you’re ready for anything, there are many different types of exercise to which Pilates relates and many different types of exercise classes available through Emma. Having had a back injury since my twenties there were limited exercise regimes available to me. Following regular Pilates in Emma’s classes I am not afraid to try most activities with varying degrees of success many of which I would never had considered previously.”
Julie Smith, 55
“Classes with Emma are friendly and not intimidating in the way some gyms can be. The groups are small enough that you get 1:1 attention. It's good fun but can still be challenging in a positive way.”
Anne Rice, 61
“I decided to take up Pilates a few years ago and found Emma by searching the web and after being impressed with her online video I decided to join her.
Emma is an excellent teacher and is always there to correct our posture if necessary, even when she is instructing via Zoom. During lockdowns her Zoom Pilate classes have been a lifesaver as not only are we keeping fit, but we are able to "see" our friends which helps keep our spirits up in such difficult times.”
Rita Beasley, 75
“Emma always allows for different levels of fitness in each session, so you never feel you are not achieving to an expected standard, because of this I attend sessions confidently knowing I will enjoy them.”
Pat Dear, 61
"Emma is a really good teacher who pays attention to every person in the class and can adapt exercises to suit particular needs; she is very thorough and explains the exercises and how to do them really well - I always feel very safe in her Pilates classes". Actually, having experienced other teachers in your group, they are all very thorough too - you trained them well!
Theresa Jessey, 69
