Will Pilates help my back pain?
In this article
Very likely, yes, and it's one of the most common reasons people walk through our door.
A huge number of our members came to us specifically because of back pain: long-standing stiffness, recurring niggles, post-surgery recovery, desk-related aches, you name it. Pilates helps by strengthening the deep core muscles that support your spine, improving posture, and teaching your body to move in a more balanced way. When your core is doing its job, your back doesn't have to compensate so hard.
That said, we never make medical claims, and back pain has many causes. What we do is start carefully. Your induction lets us understand your history, and every class is adapted to you. We avoid anything that aggravates your symptoms and build strength gradually. Emma is Level 4 qualified and the team has extensive experience working with backs that need a bit of extra care.
Most members notice a reduction in back pain within a few weeks of regular classes, though it varies from person to person. Some feel better after one session; others need a couple of months.
If you're under a physio or GP for your back, bring their guidance with you and we'll work within it. Pilates is often an excellent partner to proper medical care.
