Is Pilates easy?

Pilates looks easy. That's the trick of it.

From the outside, it's people lying on mats moving fairly slowly. No sweat dripping, no music thumping, nobody gasping. Then you try it, and discover that lifting one leg two inches off the floor, slowly, without letting your back arch or your hips tip, is genuinely demanding. Small movements done properly are much harder than big movements done sloppily.

That said, easy is never the enemy here. If you want a gentler session, we have lower-intensity classes and Chair Pilates, and you're always welcome to stay with the foundation version of every exercise. Plenty of our members come specifically for the gentle end of the scale, for mobility, balance and staying comfortable in daily life. That's a completely valid reason to do Pilates and we'd never push you past it.

What Pilates isn't is pointless. Even our gentlest sessions are doing real work: strengthening the deep muscles that support your spine, improving balance, keeping joints moving well. Members in their 70s and 80s tell us they notice it in ordinary things, getting out of the car, carrying shopping, walking downstairs confidently.

Easy to start, easy to adapt, but never a waste of an hour.
