What is 'The Core'?
In this article
Your core is much more than your abs, and that's the first thing we explain to new members. When we say "core," we mean the deep cylinder of muscles that wraps around your middle: your deep abdominals, your lower back muscles, your pelvic floor, and your diaphragm. Together they act like a natural corset, supporting your spine, controlling your pelvis, and helping you move safely whether you're reaching for a mug or getting out of the car.
A strong core doesn't mean a visible six-pack. It means your body can stabilise itself while you move, which is exactly why so many of our members with back pain notice a real difference once they start training it properly. When your core is doing its job, your back doesn't have to take all the strain.
In class we teach core control through breathing, posture, and small, deliberate movements. Nothing flashy, nothing aggressive, just the right muscles switching on in the right order. And because every exercise is adapted to you, you'll feel what it's supposed to feel like in your own body rather than copying a shape.
Understanding your core is the foundation of everything else in Pilates. Once it clicks, the rest follows.
